Be Prepared: If you would like or need to have a document notarized, be prepared with a proper form of identification. A Notary will need to be able to see a proper form of identification to validate who you are for notarization. A notaries main function is to identify and with the notarization they perform, validate that the person signing is truly the person named in the document and meant to be signing the document.A proper form of identification will need to be a U.S. Government ID such as a State Driver's License, State issued non-driver's ID, U.S. Passport, or Permanent Residency Card issued by Homeland Security's Immigration Division.
If you are in need of a certified copy of a document such as a birth certificate, death certificate or marriage license, this is not something a notary public can help you with. For these items, which are considered vital records, you must go to the office where the document originated, such as the County Recorder's Office where the birth, death or marriage is recorded. They can assist you in obtaining a certified copy. They are the only one who can help you to get a certified copy of these items.
