HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOMER BASE
There are so many helpful sites on the internet where you can
find several database of company listings. Some even have the link to go direct
to the company website and sign-up. Those who do not have a sign-up option,
consider finding an email on the site and email them asking them to email you a
notary package.
Now I have scanned in a copy of my certificates, E&O insurance,
Bonding, Certifications, and a signed copy of a W-9. This makes things quicker
to find instead of digging them out each time to make a copy when I want to sign
up with a company. I thought this would allow me to just email the whole thing
off instead of faxing which would save paper, printing and long distance
charges, however, you still need to sign their agreement. If you can sign it and
scan it in and they have an email address available to submit that saves a bunch
of $ and time.
My scanner is a bed/window one. I don't have the option to set
up a stack of pages to scan in simultaneously. As such, I still print them all
and fax them. This does have an advantage. I have set up binders. Each time I
fax a new application to a company I add those items to my binder in
alphabetical order. Consider using a different color divider for each year still
putting them in the binder in alphabetical order. This way, down the road, you
can see what year you set up with them. If you have not done any business with
them consider updating your information with them and maybe even a phone call to
see why they have not used you.
When you are searching up these companies, it is always best to
see what areas they currently cover. There is no sense signing up with a company
that doesn't cover your area.
Signing up with all these companies is time consuming. Consider
doing it when you have a couple days to devote to it.
I am hesitant to provide a list of sites to find company
directories. I am not looking to endorse any specific sites at this time.
A search on the internet will bring up a multitude of which you can determine
which to use. You can also do a search for Signing Companies and Title and
Escrow Companies and look at their website to see if they have a notary sign up
section.
New Developments: The United Notary Association has a Business
Directory of approximately 200 Title Companies and Signing Services to sign up
with. www.mwna.net There is a forum with lots
of information about which companies are good to work for and which ones to stay
away from.
If you have questions about becoming a Signing Agent or
questions that pop up as a Signing Agent the 'Notary Voice' forum at the United
Notary Association website has lots of good information.
The United Notary Association at
www.mwna.net also has a free basic membership which will get you listed in
the Notary Locator. They currently have 1600+ Mobile Notaries and Signing Agents
